Translators and interpreters credentialed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) are required to complete 120 Professional Development (PD) points during each three-year recertification period. This requirement applies to all certified categories, including translators, interpreters, and specialist interpreters.

The 120 PD points must include a minimum of 30 points in each of the following three compulsory categories:

• Skills Development and Knowledge (minimum 30 points)
• Industry Engagement (minimum 30 points, including at least one Ethics activity worth 10 points)
• Maintenance of Language (minimum 30 points)

Examples of acceptable PD activities include:

• Attending workshops, training, or seminars on translation, interpreting, technology, or professional practice
• Participating in industry conferences, professional body events, or ethics training (online or in-person)
• Maintaining language skills through advanced study, reading, or structured practice

Practitioners must maintain PD and work practice logbooks via the NAATI Online portal and submit these as part of their recertification application. Documentation must clearly demonstrate activities undertaken, point values, and how minimum requirements were met.

Recertification Process:

• Recertification occurs every three years from the date of first certification.
• Applications open three months before credential expiry and may be submitted up to three months after expiry.
• Applications must include PD and work practice logbooks, supporting documentation, and payment of the assessment fee.

Audit: NAATI conducts random audits of 5–10% of applications. If selected, practitioners must provide additional supporting documentation for PD activities claimed.
